Thoroughly Modern Millie, based on the 1967 Julie Andrews film, is set in the Roaring Twenties and tells the story of a young flapper named Millie and her friends.
Thoroughly Modern Millie won six 2002 Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie is the story of a young girl from Kansas who comes to New York City in search of a new life for herself in the Roaring 20's. You and your students will be taken back to Manhattan at the height of the Jazz Age, when women were just beginning to enter the workforce and rewriting the rules of love.
Break all the rules -- that was the motto of the 1920's in America. Thoroughly Modern Millie takes young people back to this exhilarating time, a time so different from and yet very similar to their own. The 1920's were all about moving fast and moving forward, and when there was no more room to move forward, we moved up in buildings that scraped the sky. Millie comes to New York wide-eyed and full of wonder, determined to be as "modern" as the city around her. What she finds is an inner struggle many young people today will identify with: whether to embrace modern notions or look to more traditional ideas.
