The hit musical Wicked, also known by its full name, Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, tells the tale of the magical land of Oz and the relationship between the witches of Oz before Dorothy arrived. The hit musical production was based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The musical takes place in the magical land of Oz; first introduced in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Although the musical references Dorothy’s story it is designed to mostly provide a backdrop of the relationship between Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch of the North. The story features the friendship and conflicts between the two as they grow up and attend school together and eventually details Elphaba’s public fall from grace and position as the “wicked” witch of the land.

The musical first premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in 2003. The original cast featured three of the biggest names in Broadway today; Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Joel Grey as the Wizard and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. These actors and the rest of the cast and crew behind Wicked would go on to win three Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards and the cast’s album from the production received a Grammy Award as well. As of November 2012, the show is the 12th longest running Broadway production in history and with a great amount of popularity still driving the play; fans can expect it will be around for much longer.

Since it first debuted, this musical has broken numerous box office records in cities across the country. The play has had touring weekly gross records, Broadway gross records and more. To date the play has been seen by millions across North America. This has spawned several other productions world wide. Fortunately, due to the popularity and the music of this production, fans who are looking to see Wicked live will often have the chance, even if they cannot make it to the Broadway stage in order to see this one-of-a-kind take on one of the most magical places ever imagined.
