Barbra Streisand History

Barbra Streisand is one of the most recognized faces in show business as a pop singer, an Academy Award Winning actress and as a successful producer and director. The Brooklyn-born superstar, who has released over 60 albums, put on the biggest concert in Las Vegas history in 1999, and now she is ready to hit the stage once again. You\'ll want to get your Barbra Streisand tickets soon before they sell out.

Streisand made herself known in the early 1960s, performing at clubs in New York and soon signing a deal with Columbia Records. She released The Barbra Streisand Album in 1963, collected two Grammy awards, and was rocketed to fame as the best-selling female artist in the United States. She was soon on Broadway with the 1964 version of Funny Girl and the musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale.

With these performances Streisand became respected and sought after for work in film and television, while still being the number one female singer throughout the 60s and 70s.  Her first starring film role was a 1968 adaptation of Funny Girl, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. From there she went on to do more comedies, musicals and dramas. Her directorial debut came in 1983 with the film Yentl, winning the Golden Globe for Best Director and Best Picture.

Over her 40-year singing career she has been consistently releasing albums and touring, though in recent years she hasn\'t been as prolific. Streisand has also used her fame to help boost The Streisand Foundation, which raises money for AIDS research, protection of the environment and many human rights causes. In 2005, she released a collaboration called Guilty Pleasures with former Bee Gee Barry Gibb, a follow-up to the 1980 album Guilty, and hinted at a final concert tour.

A Barbra Streisand performance is a huge event, as is evident in her 2000 album Timeless: Live In Concert. Barbra Streisand tickets will undoubtedly go very quickly, as these may be the final shows for the 60-something diva, who has captured the hearts of millions and become a legend in her own time.
