Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Drew began his career as a comedian, and appeared on Star Search in 1988. After that he was invited to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1991. He then appeared in an HBO Young Comedians Special. In 1994, Carey starred in a Showtime stand-up special and won a Cable Ace Award for Best Writing. Drew had proved his quick witted, melancholy comedy was raucously funny and began to use his popularity to diversify his career

In 1995, he was given his own sitcom, The Drew Carey Show. In 1998, he brought the hilarious British improvisational comedy show Who's Line Is It Anyway to the USA. In 2000, Drew was awarded an honorary Ph.D from Cleveland State University. In October of 2002, Carey was roasted by the New York Friar's Club, and he received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame the following year.
