Grey Gardens History

For a magical theatrical experience you will never forget, take a musical trip to Grey Gardens! One of the most bizarre but genuinely fascinating true stories ever to be adapted for the stage, this unique, funny, but poignant glimpse into the lives of two unforgettable women opened off-Broadway to rave reviews, packed houses, and great word-of-mouth. Get your tickets before they sell out!

Grey Gardens the musical is based upon a famous documentary of the same name. In 1973, film-makers Albert and David Maysles were shooting an unrelated project on Long Island when they stumbled upon a dilapidated, twenty-eight-room mansion where an aging and reclusive ex-socialite by the name of Edith Bouvier Beale lived with her only daughter -- and approximately fifty cats. The two ladies had achieved a certain local notoriety because of the relative squalor of their living conditions -- and even more because of their pronounced eccentricity. Health officials in the area worried about building and sanitation code violations, and some of the neighbors were decidedly uncomfortable with the Beales' unpredictable behavior.

But the complete history of Big Edie and Little Edie was more unusual still. The Beales turned out to be the aunt and first cousin of no less a personage than former First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis! One can imagine the tales they could tell and the long, strange route they had followed to their lonely and unconventional existence. Some people claimed that Grey Gardens was haunted -- and in a sense it was: with tattered memories of life in the glamorous and glittering pre-War high society, broken dreams of failed romances, abandoned hopes, and fading mementos. Little Edie's past in particular seemed fairly tragic. As a young woman, she longed for a career on the stage, but gave it up to care for her mother. Did she regret her decision? Find out -- as the Edies sing, dance, and bicker -- and reveal their true selves in this candid, crazy, comic celebration of two genuine characters!

Grey Gardens generated a lot of discussion when it was first released, and the film quickly became a cult classic. Now, more than twenty years later, it's still a mesmerizing story, and has been set to music in a fresh and lively new theatrical adaptation. With a score by Scott Frankel, lyrics by Michael Korie, and book by Doug Wright, this thought-provoking, life-affirming musical will enchant you! Don't wait to get tickets to meet two of the most interesting individuals ever to shock society -- the Edies of Grey Gardens!
