Jonny Lang History

Jonny Lang is a passionate and energetic blues performer, with remarkable talent as a fret-sliding guitar technician and rock vocalist. Lang was just 14 years old when Kid Jonny Lang and the Big Bang released Smokin' in 1995 to immediate critical acclaim. Despite his age, Lang astounded established contemporary guitarists and audiences alike with his musical accomplishment and individual flair for traditional blues music. The only more remarkable thing than his age and guitar playing abilities is his voice, which contains the embittered, scratchy tone of an aged blues veteran and hardly seems to fit this handsome Dakota lad. With the release of his first new album in three years in 2006, tickets to see Jonny Lang are resurging in popularity.

Jon Gordon Langseth Jr was born and raised in Fargo, North Dakota. One evening a 12 year old Jonny was taken by his father to see the local blues outfit, the Bad Medicine Blues Band. After only a short time the band taught Jonny the guitar, practiced with him, and soon hired him as a guitarist and changed the band name to front Kid Jonny Lang. After the release of Smokin', Jonny was offered an individual record contract with A&M, releasing Lie to Me under that label in 1997. His smooth, classical guitar style earned Lie to Me considerable success, and 1998's Wander This World was also well received, reaching #28 in the Billboard top 200 albums. When the aptly named Long Time Coming was released three years later, it reached even higher (#17) on the charts. Wander This World earned Jonny Lang a Grammy nomination, and Lang was invited to perform for an audience at the White House in 1999.

The anticipation of Turn Around late in 2006 has been fuelled by successful live tours with rock luminaries such as Eric Clapton and Aerosmith as well as numerous tv and film cameos. The high standard of live play needed to achieve such acceptance from the musical establishment is part of the reason why so many people will say that buying Jonny Lang tickets and seeing him live is the only way to truly appreciate his performances.

Although it is only natural to be astounded by the musical success of one so young, let's not forget that Jonny Lang now has well over 10 years of concert and recording experience. Increasing in popularity along with the proliferation of his own original compositions in his recordings and the integration of the traditional blues rock ethic into his unique modern-rock sound shows a large degree of growth and maturity.
