Lewis Black was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. He attended Yale University where his gift for storytelling led him to a career on the stage as a playwright, an actor, and a stand-up comedian.
As an actor, Black has appeared in such films as Hannah and Her Sisters, Jacob's Ladder, The Hard Way and The Night We Never Met. Not limiting himself to any one type of acting, his theater credits include Indians at McCarter Theatre, Self-Defense at the Long Wharf Theatre, Our Father which played at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Johnny-on-the-Spot which ran at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. His television acting credits include Bernie on The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, guest-starring roles on Homicide and Mad About You, and a starring role in the television pilot Harvey Berger, Salesman. As a playwright he has authored over 40 plays that have been produced in theaters all across the country.
Despite his busy schedule and all of his success, Lewis Black is still committed to helping others pursue the path he has taken. He spends summers acting and teaching at the legendary Williamstown Theatre Festival. The summer artistic theater retreat is home to Joanne Woodward, Gwyneth Paltrow and Olympia Dukakis.
Black has been dubbed 'America's Foremost Commentator on Everything,' largely due to his weekly political commentary on Comedy Central's The Daily Show. Recently he starred in his own half hour special on Comedy Central entitled Black Humor. It was such a hit that he performed part of the show for the audience at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen.
As a stand-up comedian, Lewis Black has opened for Gladys Knight, the band Chicago, Ray Charles, and Harry Belafonte. He's also often seen on The Conan O'Brien Show. In addition to The Daily Show, Lewis can be seen as a sports announcer on Hoop Life, a Showtime series produced by Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana. In his spare time Black works with the 52nd Street Project, a non-profit organization where members of the theatrical community do work with inner city children. He also spends time working on fundraisers and benefit shows for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Black's 40-plus plays that have been produced at theaters across the country, include Czar of Rock and Roll with Rusty Magee and The Laundry Hour with Mark Linn-Baker. He was Playwright-in-Residence and Associate Artistic Director of the West Bank Cafe Downstairs Theatre Bar where many of his plays were produced, including The Deal. The film version of The Deal can be seen on the Sundance Channel.
