Sigur Rós is spacey and spectacular. They can put you in a trance with the fine array of instruments they use to soothe and infect the mind and body. This Icelandic band's music is an art form, flowing and floating to your ears on strings of love. Sigur Rós's music has an awe-inspiring form and structure achieved through tasteful production and pure undeniable talent. The band's members exhibit complex musicianship and a very sophisticated style in all that they have created.
Sigur Rós has been around Iceland since 1994. Von, meaning hope, was their first album released in 1997 on Iceland's Bad Taste record label. Members Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson (vocals), Georg “Goggi” Hólm (bass), Kjartan “Kjarri” Sveinsson (keyboards) and Orri Páll Dýrason (drums) built their own recording studio to record their third album while their second album, Ágætis Byrjun, was creating good press for them all over the world. They have toured Iceland, Europe, the US and even Japan in their long history.
The release of the single 'Svefn-G-Englar' won Sigur Rós the title of NME's Single of the Week in September 1999. In 2001, Sigur Rós won the Shortlist Prize for Artistic Achievement in Music and Ágætis Byrjun was also touted as Iceland's Best Album of the Century. Sigur Rós has been compared to the accomplished and complex musicians in Morcheeba and the Stone Roses. Sigur Rós has even been a big ticket seller opening for Radiohead all over Europe.
Tickets to see Sigur Rós live are really an incredible opportunity. You will experience the band's spirited strings and jazzy undertones as the music melodically filters through your very soul.
